As a mother of expat kids of color, I realized very quickly that books for multicultural, multilingual children are hard to find. The few that exist are a high reading level and historically educational, leaving a serious gap in reading options for the younger demographic. This is what led me to begin writing dual language children’s books.
My focus is on writing age-appropriate multilingual books with non-historical characters. The books touch on experiences that children across cultures can relate to, like the fear of going to the doctor or not fitting in.
Because these books are created for multilingual families, it was important to me that these books rhyme in both included languages. This helps the adult and child to bond over shared vocabulary and meanings, and provide normalcy in age-specific content. My children’s books are uniting tools for new language learners and intergenerational families. I look forward to continuing this legacy that honors my own multicultural family.
